Chin Department of Computer Science, Xiamen University, Xiamen 361005, China Department of Computer Science, University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Abstract Constructing a feasible solution, where the focus is on “hard” constraints only, is an important part of solving timetabling problems. For the University Course Timetabling Problem (UCTP), we propose a heuristic algorithm to schedule events to timeslots based on cliques, each representing a set of events that could be scheduled in the same timeslot, which the algorithm constructs. Our algorithm has been tested on a set of well-known instances, and the experimental results show that our algorithm compares favorably with other effective algorithms.

A discrete-event optimization framework for mixed-speed train timetabling problem

Railway scheduling is a complex task of rail operators that involves the generation of a conflict-free train timetable. This paper presents a discrete-event simulation-based optimization approach for solving the train timetabling problem to minimize total weighted unplanned stop time in a hybrid single and double track railway networks. The designed simulation model is used as a platform for ge...

Construction of Course Timetables Based on Great Deluge and Tabu Search

The course timetabling problem deals with the assignment of a set of courses to specific timeslots and rooms within a working week subject to a variety of hard and soft constraints. Solutions are called feasible if all the hard constraints are satisfied. The goal is to satisfy as many of the soft constraints as possible whilst constructing a feasible schedule. In this paper, we present a combin...

Using Pattern Search Algorithm and Finite Element Method to Detect Rotor Cracks

The vibration pattern of a rotor system reflects the mechanical parameter changes in the system. Hence, the use of vibration monitoring is considered as a possible means of detecting the presence and growth of the cracks. In this paper, a pattern search based method for shaft crack detection is proposed and described which formulates the shaft crack detection as an optimization problem by means...

A state-of-the-art realization of cyclic railway timetable computation

We describe the Periodic Event Scheduling Problem (PESP) based on periodic event networks and extend it by symmetry constraints. The modeling power of the PESP is discussed for automatic calculation of feasible periodic railway timetables. Including the described extensions, complete modeling of integrated regularinterval timetables is possible. Encoding PESP to propositional logic enables the ...

The Tidy Set: A Minimal Simplicial Set for Computing Homology of Clique ComplexesI

We introduce the tidy set, a minimal simplicial set that captures the topology of a simplicial complex. The tidy set is particularly effective for computing the homology of clique complexes. This family of complexes include the Vietoris-Rips complex and the weak witness complex, methods that are popular in topological data analysis. The key feature of our approach is that it skips constructing ...
